Mounjaro (tirzepatide) – Who Can Get It on the NHS?

We’ve had many questions about Mounjaro, the new weight loss injection. Here’s what you need to know.

Mounjaro is currently only available on the NHS for a small group of patients, under strict criteria:

You must:

Be 18 or over
Have a BMI of 40+, or 37.5+ if you’re from a Black, Asian or other minority ethnic background
AND
Have 4 or more weight-related health conditions (e.g. type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, heart disease)

It’s initially being prescribed by specialist hospital clinics and will be rolled out in gradual stages to GPs from late June 2025 onwards – but only for people who meet the above criteria. Please see the following link:      https://improvinglivesnw.org.uk/our-work/healthier-communities/medicines/tirzepatide-frequently-asked-questions/

It is not available for general weight loss or cosmetic reasons, even if you’re willing to pay privately.

Support is available – if you’re looking for help managing your weight, and don’t qualify for Mounjaro, check out the “Other support for losing weight” on the webpage inserted above.

Thank you for helping us keep our lines clear for those who need medical care.
